The Psychology of a Confident Golf Swing Part one.
Before focusing on the subject of developing confidence with ones golf swing I want you all to think about this notion; you cannot just "Think" yourself a wonderful golf swing. Otherwise, we would all just think about pots of gold arriving in our front rooms and we'd all be rich. However, the pots of gold do not arrive just by thinking about them, likewise, our golf swing does not transform into that of Tiger Woods just by thought alone. Something needs to be done to get confident about that golf swing. So, this is the first notion that I want you to think about before I talk about building a powerful level of confidence in your golf swing.
When anyone is developing a new confident golf swing, there needs to be an element of action that is taken to alter and update the golf swing properly and effectively. Something new needs to be done enough times for the unconscious mind to learn it.
The early success philosophers and gurus like Stephen Covey and Napoleon Hill recognised that in order for a new behaviour to happen unconsciously and automatically, it needs to be done for 21 consecutive days. So then the new behaviour is learned thoroughly by the unconscious mind and your confidence in your golf swing can begin to happen on auto-pilot. So, any confidence with your golf swing needs some conscious effort and repeated application for your new confident golf swing to happen unconsciously.
Now, when you have a new way of doing things, the other, old, unwanted way of doing things doesn't just wither away instantly. It remains in the bank. If you were confined to a wheelchair, the muscles in your legs would begin to experience atrophy, the same way that when certain parts of your brain are not used, they experience atrophy; this is why it is difficult for us learn languages when we are much older and school kids find it a bit easier; that part of our brain has not been used for a long time.
The old golf swing needs significant time to experience atrophy. Imagine that here and now as you read this, your unconscious mind has carved out a distinct way of you swinging your golf club and this way is well defined by repitition from the past. Every time you step up to perform your golf swing, your unconscious mind carries on down that well trodden pathway that you have always gone down; your golf swing is the same. It is the only way that it knows and is the easiest route to take.
When you create an alternative, confident new golf swing, you are carving out a new pathway that needs to be trodden down and paved well several times, so that your unconscious knows it is there and knows that it can take this route in certain circumstances, events and situations.
Ok. So then with repeatedly taking the new pathway, the old pathway can begin to overgrow and have its own atrophy. However, we all know how easy it is to unearth an old pathway and drift back to our old golf swing; if we allow ourselves to go back along that way, it can begin to get carved out again.
These notions can form the foundation of any programme of change. However we are focussing on your golf swing here today and how to develop enhanced confidence with your golf swing.
When I first became involved with the world of hypnosis, NLP and personal development, I read a wonderful book by a man called Dr Maxwell Maltz entitled "Psycho-cybernetics" that formed the basis of many modern ideas as to how we understand personalities. Dr Maltz was a plastic surgeon and he found that if he changed the way people looked, often it changed their personality too. When people looked different, they also felt different. Often people that had lacked confidence, were transformed into more confident, outgoing people who lived life with more zest.
What perplexed Dr Maltz is that some of clients did not seem to get happier. Some, whose appearance had changed a lot, didn't seem to change their feelings. They still felt lacking in confidence.
So what Dr Maltz concluded was that cosmetic surgery would not benefit the client if they had a poor image of themselves. His solution was to create a visualisation technique that helped them to change their inner self-image. He had some wonderful results. So when the clients changed the way they felt about themselves, they became happier and more fulfilled and their confidence grew. You know that when you feel great about your golf swing, your golf swing is better and you are more competent with your golf swing. The technique is simple, here it is;
Firstly, imagine your golf swing as you would ideally like your golf swing to be. Think about how you would look if you were as happy and confident as you wanted to be with your golf swing. How do you walk? What do you wear? What expressions are on your face? How do you move? Take all the time necessary for this, to really get an idea of how you are when you are confident with your golf swing.
Secondly, when you know what you will look like, make a film clip inside your mind, in your imagination of yourself being happy, confident and deeply self-assured with your golf swing.
Thirdly, imagine yourself stepping into that film, imagine seeing through those eyes, hearing through those ears, and feel those confident feelings, think to yourself; how do I know the confident feelings? Where in my body are they? Enjoy feeling and being exactly how you want to be.
Lastly for this exercise, imagine that when you get up tomorrow you awaken as that ideal you, feeling this good and imagine your golf swing going as you want it to and be confident about your golf swing.
Remember what I said at the beginning, you must use this technique over and over in order to get the most from it and really make yourself a confident golf swing. Look out for part two of this article of getting confident with your golf swing.

Golf Swing Takeaway Tip - The Early Backward Wrist Break
By John Lynch
I’ll never forget the time a few years ago when my brother in law Steve explained to me how he discovered a major break through in his golf swing. He describes this golf swing takeaway tip as “lightning in a bottle”…the true holy grail of golf!
Steve told me he had been sitting at an 8 handicap for about 4 years and was getting very frustrated at his lack of improvement. He practiced diligently however he had truly reached a plateau in his golf game.
He went through about 4 golf pros during this time and every one of them told him there was nothing wrong with his golf swing. Eventually he started playing less and less golf and was about ready to give it up altogether.
Steve said while on vacation with his family he was browsing through an old book store on Martha’s Vineyard when he came across a used copy of Joe Dante’s “Four Magic Moves to Winning Golf” written in 1972. He said he couldn't put the book down so out of courtesy to the store owner he bought it.
Steve showed me the book and as I leafed through it I was amazed at all the beautifully drawn illustrations showing how to swing a golf club properly. Andy Brown has since revised this book for the 21st century and offers many media formats to read or listen to the book.
Steve turned to the chapter that explains “the early backward wrist break” and told me this one magic move has totally transformed his golf game! He went on to say how golf pros never tell you HOW to break the wrists during the backswing for whatever reason. Steve believes the first 18 inches of the backswing are the most critical.
Most golfers fan the clubface open early in the backswing causing them to swing the club way too much to the inside…this knocks the swing off plane early in the backswing. Golfers then usually spend the rest of the golf swing trying to adjust so they can just make contact with the ball…not a good recipe for success!
The book goes on to say there should be no open or closing of the clubface early in the backswing…if you correctly perform the early backward wrist break your swing will be on plane early in the swing…Steve says he feels like the club is swinging itself…a truly effortless swing!
I am happy to say that my brother in law Steve is now a scratch golfer, thanks to this one magic move that has transformed his golf game!
When you make the backward wrist break perfectly - only one knuckle of your left hand (right handed golfers) and two knuckles of your right hand should be visible and the golf club should be parallel to your target line.
(Photo courtesy of The New Four Magic Moves to Winning Golf by Andy Brown and Joe Dante.)
You pay a lot of money to play this great game of golf…so why not enjoy it more by playing the golf you are capable of?
Try this golf swing takeaway tip and build the early backward wrist break into your golf swing and I promise you will halve your handicap in 2 weeks!

Where to Position the Golf Ball For Iron Play
Now the basic rule for ball positioning in your iron play is that the shorter clubs should be played from the center of your stance and the longer clubs further forward in your stance. So if you have a shot that requires a pitching or sand wedge, the ball should be placed in the center of your stance and a lot closer to your body than it would be if you were hitting a three iron.
For a five iron, the ball should be placed one ball's width in front of center and further away from your body than for a wedge.
Consequently for a three iron the ball should be placed just inside your left heel. Now the reason for the different ball positions is too change the angle of approach of the club head to the ball so that the optimum angle is utilised when hitting the ball.
Therefore when hitting the ball with a wedge the center position of the ball forces you to have a steep angle of approach on the ball. This helps the ball get up faster and higher in the air and imparts more backspin on the ball.
With the ball position on the inside of your left heel with the longer irons your swing path will be more shallow helping you to hit the ball further and straighter. This is one of the keys to solid iron play. I hope this helps.

Buying the Best Golf Clubs for Beginners
Golf clubs are broken down into sets of complete or incomplete, as well as irons, woods, drivers, putters, wedges, and hybrids. Golf clubs can be purchased in any combination of the above, but typically for beginners it is good to start with the entire set. Also women's clubs are sold as sets, but typically differ from men's clubs in size. Golf clubs in sets typically come with a bag that has stands on it, so it can rest on itself while you are taking your shots. Also golf sets occasionally will come with tops for the heads, as well as towels, umbrellas, and even balls.
Golf club sets can be purchased at a number of places. In order of price, most expensive to least, you can buy clubs at a pro shop; this will be your most expensive option. You can also buy clubs at sporting good stores, or golf specialty stores. For those bargain shoppers you can purchase a full set of clubs at Wal Mart, or even your local thrift store. For the internet shopper's eBay offers a great selection of new and used golf club sets.
The cost for a set of clubs can vary from less than $100 for an entire set, to over $10,000 for the high end clubs. Typically golfers can buy a decent set of clubs for $400 depending on where they are shopping. High end clubs are often bought in singles, thus making it more costly to purchase a set. One driver can cost over $1,000 at a local pro shop.
The term you get what you pay for isn't true in the world of golf clubs. Unlike cars, or computers, typically golf clubs can be beneficial at a low cost. Further, many prefer cheaper clubs, or used clubs, because they offer a more standard weight and grip. Golf clubs are uniquely made out of several different materials, and can vary depending on a user's preference. The cheaper clubs have a level feel to them, and don't offer too much of any one element. If a beginner spends a large amount of money on an ultra light driver, it could be too light for them to learn the basics of their swing, this actually prohibiting them from learning the basics.
Overall it's important to start off with a modest set of clubs until your game advances to levels that call for new clubs. Plus with all the money you save you can buy your significant other a set, and make a date at the course.

Finding The Perfect Golf Clubs
The following article lists some simple, informative tips that will help you have a better experience with golf clubs.
Hopefully the information presented so far has been applicable. You might also want to consider the following:
If you think any old golf clubs will do, you haven't been on the course trying to compensate for a club that's simply too long or two short. Besides making a shambles of your golf game, ill-fitting clubs can leave your body aching after the game. If you're spending all your time compensating, you probably aren't shooting your best or even enjoying the time on the course.
So does that mean that you're going to spend hundreds of extra dollars on a set of clubs with a custom fit? While custom clubs are one answer, most people can find what they need from a well-stocked golf store. But there are some things to keep in mind.
Length of the club is important, but it's not everything. The pros say that the size of your golf club's grip should be comfortable for your hands. That's why clubs for younger players and women often have a smaller grip.
If you should decide to go for a set of custom clubs, what is the process? It's nothing like be measured for a suit. The point is not only to make the club reach from the point of your outstretched hand to the ground, but also to make the most of your body - your strengths and your weaknesses. So don't go for your custom golf club fitting session expecting to spread your arms and stand still while someone uses a tape measure.
A good custom fit will probably take place both inside and outside. The best custom fit clubs will be tailored so that your swing is taken into account. Sound expensive? Possibly.
While some major golf club manufacturers will charge (dearly) for the actual "fitting," many offer up this service for free, with your commitment to buy clubs from that company. While custom clubs are more expensive than clubs purchased "off the shelf" from your local golf supplier or even from an outlet store or individual, the results will probably show themselves right away on the golf course.
Consider the shots that you may have been compensating for all your years of playing golf. If you're taller or shorter than the "typical" golfer, or even if you have some muscle strengths or weaknesses that make your game a bit more of a challenge, custom clubs can help you compensate.
But what if you want the clubs immediately? Do you have to go with "off the shelf" clubs? Actually, many manufacturers who provide custom golf clubs promise delivery within just a few days, a week or two at most.
Among the few negatives of custom golf clubs is the potential for offering them up as a surprise gift and the potential for resale. But at the same time, the golfer who is going to receive the custom clubs will likely gladly give up the "surprise" and most who go to this expense and trouble aren't going to offer the clubs for sale.
Only you can decide whether custom golf clubs are a good investment for you. If you're going to spend a bundle of money for an awesome set of clubs, you may very well take the extra step to get custom clubs.
There's a lot to understand about golf clubs. We were able to provide you with some of the facts above, but there is still plenty more to write about in subsequent articles.

Correct Ball Position When Putting
One way to improve your putting is to place the ball in the correct position at address to ensure that you strike the ball at the optimum point with the sweet spot of the putter in the intended direction. Ball position is as important in the putting stroke as it is in the full swing.
The best position of the golf ball in the putting stroke is slightly forward of the center of your stance. The reason the ball should be positioned slightly forward is so that you place an ascending blow when the putter-face meets the ball. This imparts good forward role on your putts and and gives them the best chance of reaching the hole.
The ball should also be placed directly under your eyes at address so that you have the best perspective of the line from the ball to the hole. This will greatly improve your putting score as you will be able to line your putts up better and have more chance of sinking them.
A simple drill to ensure the ball is placed under your eyes when you putt is the following.
Adopt a comfortable putting stance and then drop the ball from the bridge of your nose. The place where the ball lands is the perfect ball position for you.
Hope this helps

Biomechanics and Golf
Today there is a plethora of information being offered about golf. Some of it correct, all of it interesting, but how much of it is relevant to you? And how do you know which of these generic exercise tips is going to help you? Even if you trained using each one for 6 weeks and then took the results onto the course and tried them - how do you then know whether your performance is 'that exercise' or that you just had a good day?
Even video/digital analysis, although interesting from all points of view measure the movement discrepancies in a golfer's swing, it doesn't tell us why you are performing these movement aberrations. Knowing what you're doing wrong, but not knowing why you're doing it is sometimes worse than not knowing what you're doing wrong!
Golfers and Coaches need a simple system of analysis that they can use in conjunction with their coaching techniques to find out why golfers perform their particular swing. Although there are fundamental similarities to all good swings, each swing is like a finger-print and unique to that individual. Why is it unique? It's because we are all biomechanically different and unless you understand what those differences are, how can you identify whether your swing is due to poor technique or something that has to done to compensate for a mechanical problem? You can't. The variety of golf swings that exists represents the many ways that the human body can compensate for its biomechanical problems.
For example, let's take a typical handicapper's slice. You know the typical causes of a slice and the things you would normally work on, bearing in mind the individual and what you see. At the same time we also know that these ways don't always work. There may be a number of reasons for this, the you may not be practicing, it may take some time to work out which is the best method for you or quite simply it may be that the person doesn't have it in him to do what you want. Alternatively, it is likely that he can't do it. If that pupil has a longer right leg (assuming he's a right handed golfer), then he will have a tendency towards a more upright back swing. We know this because of the way spine and pelvis work biomechanically. A longer right leg compresses the joints in the spine on that side and so they can't rotate easily. They therefore have to side bend to gap the joints and initiate movement, which causes an upright backswing. We also know that this then leads to a more out-to-in downswing and therefore a slice (depending upon grip and ball position of course). So you could work all day on preventing this upright backswing, which you know is leading to a slice, but it will not change until you've addressed the leg length discrepancy.
Invariably these leg length discrepancies are cause by a rotated pelvis and often they don't cause symptoms, you won't even know it exists. If this is the case then doing some simple exercises can help re-align the pelvis, reduce the leg length discrepancy and allow you to flatten that back swing.
There are many more of these examples. As well as leg length discrepancies, other biomechanical issues can include, poor motor programming strategy (the way the muscles link together in movement patterns), poor control between the pelvis and shoulders, nerve adhesions or stiffness, faulty core muscle control, immobility around the hips, pelvis and spine as well as simple lack of flexibility. Some of these issues sound quite technical and complex, but they're actually very simple to test and eradicate.
Biomechanics works 'hand in glove' with your teaching, it is crucial Pro's understand and embrace this as its going to be the next big thing in golf.
There is a system that exits that can help you and pros to learn about and address these issues. It comes 3 forms. Firstly there is a software package that takes you through some simple biomechanical tests and the expert system takes you through as series of exercises to eradicate their biomechanical problems. Secondly there are courses, which are endorsed by the PGA, which teach PGA professionals how to assess their own pupils and administer the exercises themselves. Or, thirdly experts can come to your club and assess your pupils individually and make bespoke recommendations based upon a detailed assessment of their biomechanics and following a discussion with their PGA professional, a decision can be made as to the best programme for them to follow.

LOSE WEIGHT WHILE IMPROVING YOUR GOLF GAME
The key to a successful golf fitness program is to isolate the anatomical weaknesses identified through the physical assessment. This often entails a combination of specific stretching and strengthening exercises, done on a regular basis, to help bring balance back into the golfer’s body. This is essential as the research is now crystal clear that muscle imbalance is the root cause of most swing faults, inefficient golf swings, poor performance, and both acute and chronic injury.
One of the benefits from this pursuit of a better golf game is a loss of body fat. As in any exercise program that incorporates a strength component, muscle tissue is enhanced. Not only does this improve strength, balance, and power, it makes you a better calorie burning machine.
It takes about 2 to 4 calories a day to maintain a pound of fat in your body. It takes about 50 to 70 calories a day to maintain a pound of muscle. That’s a pretty significant difference! Muscle is what drives our metabolism and when you increase muscle, you increase the number of calories you’ll burn during the day.
Most of us had more muscle when we were kids running around the neighborhood and walking to school, uphill, 6 miles both ways. Then, for one reason or another, we slow down and sit more. This wastes away our muscle and as a result lowers our metabolism. We usually don’t alter our eating patterns to make up for the slower metabolism, in most cases the eating patterns get worse, so we put on weight/fat.
When a golfer begins an exercise program to improve their swing efficiency, they inevitably will need to include strengthening exercise to correct the weaknesses they posses (and we all have some). This progressive strength component, usually moderate in intensity, has a positive impact on body composition. As you tone muscle, and this is worth repeating, you raise metabolism and burn more calories. Increase the number of calories expended during the day and you lose weight.
Now be forewarned, muscle is also denser than fat and will weigh heavier on the bathroom scale. So don’t be alarmed if the scale doesn’t change all that much, but yet you’re able to fit into those jeans you haven’t worn since high school.
A word about cardio exercise. Keeping the heart and lungs in shape is a must and will help you on the back nine when fatigue can lead to poor shots and an enhanced potential for injury. Cardio exercise is important and should be included. It will burn calories while doing the exercise, and for an hour or two afterward as your body returns back to resting state. Cardio will not, however, do anything for strength development nor will it increase resting metabolism. That needs to come from strength training.
Whether desired or not, exercising to improve your golf swing will have additional benefits for your health. One of these, if you’re consistent with your workouts, is a leaner body. This will ultimately improve your ability to burn calories and lose body weight/fat. So not only will your playing satisfaction improve, so, too, will your sense of well-being.

Learn How To Drive Long
These guide books, though, are aimed at the beginner or recreational golfer. They teach you everything about the golf swing; from the grip and setup, to the backswing and follow through. But if you are a more accomplished golfer that is looking for more detailed information about how to drive long, you will need to go to the distance golf experts.
LDA
You could start by visiting the Long Drivers of America website. They are the official golf association for the Remax Long Drive Championship. These power golf swing fanatics are all about achieving maximum golf distance. If you are attracted by the idea of participating in the Re/Max World Long Drive Championship, then visit the Long Drivers of America site.
Mike Austin
Incredibly, the Worlds longest golf drive has stood since 1974. Golf legend, Mike Austin, holds the Guinness World Record for longest drive in a tournament, with a 515-yard drive - at the age of 64, during the 1974 U.S. National Senior Open in Las Vegas.
That was using a 43.5 inch steel-shafted, wood-headed driver! So obviously, the golf equipment doesn't have that much to do with how far you can drive the ball. Though, today's long drive champions use 2X or 3X, extra stiff shafts that are up to 50 inches, and driver lofts that are as low as 5 or 6 degrees.
Learning How To Drive Long
For most of us, we just want to learn how to drive long and to improve our general golf game. Even if you have a decent grip and swing, it doesn't necessarily mean that you will have a good golf distance off the tee. The major factor that you need to improve is your golf club head speed. Every 1 mph of increased golf swing speed translates into about 2.5 yards of distance. If you increase your swing speed, you'll increase your distance.
There are other factors involved if you want to learn how to drive long off the tee. Golf fitness training and increased flexibility go along way to improving your golf distance, as well as your over-all golf game. Another aspect of your game that you should learn is the mental game of golf. The above golf subjects are usually disregarded by the majority of golfers, but they are very important if you want to really improve your game.
The Right Golf Instructor
If you really want to learn how to drive long, then look for a professional golf instructor who knows what is essential for distance golf. If you can only hit drives of 200 yards, then adding only a few extra yards to your drives won't help you that much. You need to find someone that has been at your level and who has learned how to drive 350 to 430 yards.
